Tiger Woods wins 2013 WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral

Entering the final round four strokes ahead, Tiger Woods was almost assured of a victory.  26 previous times has he held a 3 or more stroke lead heading into round 4, and 26 previous times has he won.  And during a week of firsts for Tiger, he didn't want to add this one to the list.

Woods started off the week carding his most birdies through 36 and 54 holes in his PGA Tour career.  He entered the final round with 24 birdies on the card, and added two quick ones on the front nine.  Woods was never really challenged in the final round, holding a five stroke lead through much of the back nine.  A late bogey by Woods and a birdie by Steve Stricker cut the lead to three shots, but a conservative final hole gave Woods the win by 2 shots.

With the win, Tiger Woods becomes the first two-time winner on the PGA Tour this year.  Woods moves into second place in the FedEx Cup standings and closes the gap between himself and Rory McIlroy for #1 in the Official World Golf Ranking.  McIlroy put together solid rounds Saturday and Sunday to move into the top-10.

Stricker fired his fourth round in the 60s to take second place alone at 17-under par, two behind Woods.  Finishing in a tie for third and five shots back of Woods were Adam Scott, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, and Graeme McDowell.  Keegan Bradley finished solo 7th at 12-under par, and wrapping up the top-10 were McIlroy, Justin Rose, Peter Hanson, and last week's winner Michael Thompson, who finished at 10-under par and tied for 8th.

This win is the 76th career victory for Tiger Woods, and his 17th career WGC event.  Woods is now within 6 wins of tying Sam Snead's career PGA Tour win mark.  6 of the 7 times Woods has won multiple events with the WGC Cadillac Championship he has gone on to win a major.  We will see him next at one of his favorite events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where he has won 7 times.  His next event after that will be The Masters.

The tour moves on to the Tampa Bay Championship presented by Everbank, where Luke Donald will be there to defend his title.

Tiger Woods tied for the lead with 4 others after one round at the WGC Cadillac Championship

Tiger Woods returned this week to a familiar course.  Having won at Doral 3 prior times, Woods felt right at home during the first round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship.  A putting lesson earlier in the week from Steve Stricker lead Woods to nine birdies en route to an opening round 66.  Joining Woods atop the leaderboard are Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia, and Freddie Jacobson.  All players are at 6-under par.

The opening round was extremely conducive to scoring, as the winds were down and the greens extremely receptive.  Conditions were perfect for all of the players on the course.  Woods started strong, with two early birdies, but gave those right back with two straight bogeys.  But he fought back, making seven more birdies with only one bogey in his final 13 holes to finish the round.  Garcia and McDowell played together and both fired bogey-free rounds.  Jacobson had two eagles on the round, and Watson lead a strong group who finished a combined 16-under par.

One stroke back of the leaders are a group at 5-under par which includes Stricker, Phil Mickelson, and Hunter Mahan.

Paired with Woods today was Rory McIlroy, who struggled yet again to a 1-over par 73.  McIlroy is returning to play after a controversial WD last week at the Honda Classic.  But he has handled the media scrutiny well for a young player.  But that has not translated into his play on the golf course.  McIlroy had an eagle at hole 2, but 3 straight bogeys derailed any momentum he might have gained.  He will look to get back on track tomorrow and will complete his first 4-round tournament of the year.

Action continues tomorrow on The Golf Channel at 2:00 PM ET.

Brandt Snedeker Captures 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

After runner-up finishes the past two weekends, Brandt Snedeker finally broke through to win on the PGA Tour in 2013.  Snedeker coolly played the first three rounds to set himself up with a share of the lead heading into Sunday's final round.  The first three rounds were contested on 3 different golf courses with Pebble Beach Golf Links hosting the final round.

Snedeker got off to a hot start, eagling hole #2 and pulling away to five-under par through eight holes.  Tied for the lead with Snedeker heading into the final round was rookie James Hahn.  Hahn also started strong, but was not able to keep pace with Snedeker.

Snedeker maintained a strong lead throughout the back nine, with Hahn falling off the pace.  Chris Kirk rallied to within two-strokes of Snedeker but was unable to mount any more of a charge.  Heading into the final hole, Snedeker needed only a bogey to wrap up the tournament.  Three solid shots got him on the green and a two-putt par gave him the victory.

But he wasn't done: Snedeker wanted his amateur partner to sink his long par putt to win the Pro-Am portion of the tournament as well.  But the putt slipped by and they shared the win with another group.

With the win, Snedeker moves to 4th in the Official World Golf Ranking and further solidifies his top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.

2013 Joberg Open, 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro Am and 2013 Allianz Open Coverage

The European Tour headed to South Africa and Johannesburg this weekend for the 2013 Joburg Open.  Trevor Fisher Jr. and Richard Sterne are tied for the lead after 54 holes at 19 under par.  The two South Africans are five strokes clear of the rest of the field at 19-under par.  After a round on each of the East and West course in the first two rounds, the full field moved to the East course for the remainder of the tournament.  Sterne finished second place last week in Dubai and is playing some of the best golf of his career.  Fisher Jr. is the 366th ranked player in the world.  Four players are tied for third at 14-under par, including George Coetzee and Charl Schwartzel.  Former #1 ranked amateur and US Amateur champion Peter Uihlein is in solo 7th place at 13-under par.

The PGA Tour is finishing up its 3rd round in the 2013 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.  The first three rounds included a round on each of the Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hills, and Monterey Peninsula Golf Courses.  Tomorrow's final round will take place at Pebble Beach, where the top-60 players will compete for the win and the top-25 amateur teams will look to take their title as well.  Brandt Snedeker played a solid round at Pebble Beach in his third round, taking the lead at 12-under par.  James Hahn matched Snedeker at 12-under par with a 66 at Spyglass Hill.  Richard H. Lee and Patrick Reed are three strokes back at 9-under, and Retief Goosen is four-back at 8-under par.

The Champions Tour moved to Florida this week for the first full-field event of the year.  Rocco Mediate was making his Champions Tour debut and finished the first round 1 back of the lead.  More coverage from this tournament later today.

Phil Mickelson wins 2013 Waste Management Phoenix Open

From the first tee shot on Thursday, Phil Mickelson has had his A game in Scottsdale.  With an opening round 60, Mickelson has lead wire-to-wire and finished the week with his 41st career PGA Tour victory.  A final-round 67 propelled Mickelson to a 3-stroke victory over Brandt Snedeker, who rallied early but fell back late with a 6-under par 65, just did not have enough to make up the 6-shot deficit.

Finishing 5-strokes back of Mickelson was Scott Piercy, who fired a final-round 61 to match his career low on the PGA Tour.  Ryan Moore fired a final-round 65 to finish solo 4th.

Mickelson started the final round with a six-stroke lead over Snedeker, but the lead was cut to 4 by hole 3.  At the turn, Snedeker had drawn within 3 shots with a bogey-free 31.  Mickelson fired a one-under 34 on the front nine.   The lead was maintained at three strokes for much of the front nine, and Snedeker never could claw his way closer.  Heading into hole 18, Mickelson remained 3 strokes ahead of Snedeker.

With the win, Mickelson moves to 3rd in the FedEx Cup Rankings.  Snedeker's second place finish propelled him to the top of the FedEx Cup ranking, though he has yet to win on tour this year.  Mickelson will move back into the top-10 in the Official World Golf Ranking.  Snedeker will remain within the top-10 as well.

Phil Mickelson fires 60 in first round of Waste Management Phoenix Open

Phil Mickelson, returning to his college town, seemed to have some home cooking going in Thursday's opening round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open.  Mickelson, who struggled with his driver at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, discovered something earlier this week with a new Razr Fit Extreme driver from Callaway and it paid off.

Mickelson, who attended Arizona State University and won as an amateur in the state of Arizona, opened the tournament with four straight birdies.  A few pars followed before three straight birdies to close out his first 9 holes.  Mickelson, who began at hole 10, finished the back 9 in 29 shots at -7.

An opening birdie on his front nine saw Mickelson climb to eight-under par through 10, which rose to 11-under par through 16 holes after an excellent iron shot at 7.  Mickelson would have two chances at a birdie and a 59.  On hole 8, Phil managed to find the green in regulation with a twenty foot putt.  The putt was right on line but came up two rolls short.

On hole 9, Mickelson's 18th, a solid drive turned into another twenty footer for birdie.  After reading the putt, Mickelson hit what looked to be a solid putt.  When the ball was about six feet from the hole, Mickelson raised his club in celebration, as the putt looked like it was center cut.  However, a mean stroke of luck saw the ball break right at the end and catch the lip.  It looked like it may still fall, but, alas, it did not.  Mickelson settled for what had to have been a bittersweet 60.

Mickelson played behind the pro-am group of Bo Van Pelt yesterday and watched Van Pelt fire his own 59.  That, along with the new found driving game, gave Mickelson the motivation to go out and shoot low.

Mickelson currently holds a 4-stroke lead over five players, including Brandt Snedeker and Padraig Harrington, who is making his 2013 PGA Tour debut.  Nine more players are tied at 6-under par and five back of Mickelson.  The tournament continues with the second round tomorrow, where scoring conditions again look like they'll be ideal.

Tiger Woods wins 2013 Farmers Insurance Open: Recap and Review

Tiger Woods captured his 75th career PGA Tour victory on Monday in San Diego at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course.  Woods started Monday with a six-stroke lead, grew the lead to eight, but fell back and won the tournament by 4 strokes over Brandt Snedeker and Josh Teater.  Woods fired a final-round 72 to finish at 14-under par for the tournament.

The Farmers Insurance Open was scheduled to be completed Sunday, but a full wash-out Saturday due to fog pushed the finish back to Monday.  But the wait was worth it for Woods, who became the first PGA Tour professional to win eight times on the same golf course.  Woods has won the Farmers Insurance Open 7 times (6 times when it was the Buick Invitational) and one US Open at Torrey Pines.  Woods also tied his personal record of seven victories in one tournament, which he has matched at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  Woods trails Sam Snead, who won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times.

Rounding out the top-5 were Nick Watney and Jimmy Walker, who finished 5 shots back at -9.  Watney made a run at Woods on the front nine, but four bogeys on the back saw him fall from second place to the tie for fourth.

With the win, Woods will maintain his second spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, but will pull closer to world #1 Rory McIlroy.  He jumps into the FedEx Cup Ranking in fourth place, behind Brian Gay, Russell Henley, and Dustin Johnson.  Woods has yet to announce his next event, but may not play again until the WGC Accenture Match Play Championship.

Woods will look to build off his win, as he has gone on to win 4+ times each time he has won this tournament, and major championships also are in his sights.

2013 Humana Challenge post-tournament recap

Play is complete at the 2013 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation.  What was thought to be a runaway with a clear winner turned into an exciting finish in Palm Springs.  Scott Stallings entered the final round with a five stroke lead.  That lead was maintained for much of the round, until Stallings started to falter on the back nine.  Stallings was tied with Charles Howell III, Brian Gay, and rookie David Lingmerth at 25-under par heading into the final hole.

On 18, Stallings hit a perfect drive and had a 6-iron into the par-5.  Stallings second shot, however, hit the bank on the edge of the green and ended up in the water.  He ended up making a bogey and dropped a shot out of the playoff at 25-under.

The playoff started on 18 again, where Howell III and Gay made birdies and Lingmerth was eliminated with a par.  Both Gay and Howell hit perfect drives on the second playoff hole, 10, but Howell's second ended up in a bunker while Gay's finished 6 feet under the hole.  A missed par putt by Howell allowed Gay to make the birdie and win The Humana Challenge.

The win was Gay's 4th career PGA Tour win.  He moved to the #1 spot in the FedEx Cup point standings.  Howell finished with his second-straight top-3 finish and is 4th in the FedEx Cup standings.  Rookie Russell Henley, who won last week, is second in the standings and Dustin Johnson is third.

Gay had not won on tour since 2009, when he took the Heritage and the John Deere Classic.  He also won at Mayakoba in 2008.

2013 Humana Challenge: Stallings Surges Ahead

Three rounds are in the books in the first PGA Tournament on the mainland.  The past three days have been filled with low rounds aplenty and great play all around.  The three courses have been bathed in brilliant sunshine and pristine conditions in Palm Springs as the best players in the world visited La Quinta Resort for the 2013 Humana Challenge.

Play on the La Quinta Country Club and Nicklaus Private courses is done for the week; the Palmer Private course will host the final round tomorrow.  Players have completed a round on each of the three courses and the cut is now made.  Scott Stallings, a winner on tour in each of his first two seasons, is in front by five shots heading into the final round.  Stallings matched the low round of the tournament in the third round with a 63 on the Palmer Private course, thought to be the toughest of the three in the rotation.  Rounds of 66 and 65 in the first and second rounds, respectively, have Stallings at 22-under par for the tournament.

Sitting five strokes back of the leader is a group of players lead by Stewart Cink and Charles Howell III.  Cink is looking to get his game back on track, having dropped to near 300 in the Official World Golf Ranking since winning his only major, The Open Championship.  Howell, on the other hand, has continued strong play from last week into this week, firing 67, 65, and 67 in his first three rounds.  Howell is looking for his first win in a while.  Also tied for second place at 17-under par are Roberto Castro, John Rollins, and Charley Hoffmann.

Eight players are in a tie for 7th at 16-under par.  They include Sang-Moon Bae, Kevin Streelman, Brian Stuard, Kevin Stadler, Brian Gay, Ryan Palmer, Billy Horschel, and Lee Williams.

Last week's winner Russell Henley struggled early in his round, carding a quadruple bogey 8 at hole 18, which was his ninth hole on the day.  Henley recovered nicely on his second nine, and ended up shooting a one-over par 71 to finish the third round at 12-under par.  Phil Mickelson, playing in his first tournament of the season, shot a 66 to make the cut at 11-under par.

The cut for the tournament was 10-under par, one of the lowest cuts on tour each and every year.  Tomorrow should be more of the same conditions as the field looks to catch Stallings and deny him his third tour win.

Zach Johnson: -14
Brandt Snedeker: -14
Matt Kuchar: -13

First Round of 2013 Humana Challenge

The first round of the 2013 Humana Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation is in the books.  The weather was beautiful in Palm Springs where the three courses looked pristine today.  Low scores were aplenty, where 121 of the 156 golfers shot under par.  Conditions were ideal for low scoring, as seen by each of the three courses surrendering a 63.

Leading the pack after the first round are Roberto Castro, Jason Kokrak, and James Hahn.  Each shot 9-under par 63 and each played on a different golf course.  Castro played on the Nicklaus Private course, Kokrak on the La Quinta Country Club, and Hahn on the Palmer Private course.  A shot back of the leaders are Aaron Baddeley, Russell Henley, Greg Chalmers and Doug Labelle.

Henley continued his strong play.  The rookie who won last week at the Sony Open fired a 64 to maintain his scoring average on tour.

Other notable players in the field include Patrick Cantlay, who shot 65 and is at 7-under par.  Zach Johnson is at 6-under par.  Brandt Snedeker is at 5-under par.  Phil Mickelson, who is making his 2013 season debut, shot even-par.

Play continues on the three courses tomorrow.

Russell Henley wins 2013 Sony Open in Hawaii

Entering the Sony Open at Hawaii, Russell Henley had competed in 3 total PGA Tour events.  He won a Web.com Tour event as an amateur in 2011 and two tournaments last season on the Web.com Tour.  He was a Walker Cup competitor and had an excellent amateur career.  Now, Henley can check PGA Tour Champion off his to-do list.

Henley entered the final round after setting 36-and 54-hole scoring records at the Sony Open.  His 63s on Thursday and Friday gave him a two-stroke lead over fellow PGA Tour rookie Scott Langley.  A 67 on Saturday had him tied with his friend Langley entering Sunday's final round in Honolulu.  Langley and Henley were grouped with Tim Clark who entered Sunday three shots behind the two rookies.

Henley started fast with a birdie on hole 1 while Langley fell back with a bogey out of the gates.  Solid play for Clark and Henley helped them separate a bit from the rest of the field including Langley, who struggled on Sunday to an even-par 70 and a tie for third place.  Clark and Henley traded birdies on holes 15, 16, 17, and 18, with Henley also birdieing the 14th for five straight birdies to win by three strokes.  His 36 hole total of 256 is the second-lowest total in a 72-hole tournament.  Both Henley and Clark shot 63s in the final round.

Henley's win gives him the coveted 2-year exemption on the PGA Tour, and invitations into this season's Players Championship, the PGA Championship, and the Masters.  Henley grew up in Georgia, so the Masters has always had a close place in his heart.

Charles Howell III carded a 4-under par 66 to tie Langley for third place.  Matt Kuchar, Brian Stuard, and Chris Kirk tied for fifth place.  Rounding out the top-ten were Jeff Overton in solo-eighth position and Harris English, Marc Leishman, Dicky Pride and Pat Perez in a tie for ninth.

Coming up next week on the PGA Tour is the Humana Challenge in partnership with The Clinton Foundation.

Rookies Henley and Langley tied heading into final round of 2013 Sony Open

Rookies Russell Henley and Scott Langley are tied at 17-under par heading into the final round at the Sony Open in Hawaii.  Langley, who graduated from Q School this past fall, and Henley, who was in the top-25 on the Web.com tour money list, both are vying for their first career PGA Tour wins and two-year exemption on the PGA Tour.

Henley, a graduate of the University of Georgia, took the lead into the third round after consecutive 63s in the opening two rounds.  He held a two-stroke lead over Langley and held the lead until a birdie by Langley at 13.  The players traded the lead back and forth until Henley rolled in a birdie putt at 18 to tie Langley at 17-under par.

The two players are not strangers, as both shared the low amateur title at the 2010 US Open Championship at Pebble Beach.  Both players are former Walker Cuppers as well.  Langley is a former NCAA Collegiate Individual Champion who starred for the University of Illinois, while Henley is a three-time winner on the Web.com tour.  Henley and Langley were paired in the first two rounds as well so they have gotten to know each other's game quite well the past 3 days.

Three shots back of the leaders is Tim Clark, who is finally back to full strength after injuries robbed him of the past couple of seasons.  The former Players Champion is at 14-under par.

2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions Final Round Recap and Tournament Review

After 3 straight days of wind, rain, and cancelled golf, the 2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions is finally complete.  Tournament directors and PGA Tour officials decided to cut the tournament to 54 holes in order to get play in.  Two rounds were played yesterday and the final round was played today.

Dustin Johnson entered the final round with a three-stroke lead over Steve Stricker.  Brandt Snedeker, who started the day at 6-under par and five stokes back, played the first 6 holes at 5-under and brought himself within one of the lead.  But Johnson had a solid start with 3 birdies in the first seven, while Stricker shot 3 under on the front nine.  Snedeker then ran into trouble, bogeying holes 7, 8, and 9 to fall back.

On the back nine, the tournament seemed to come down to Johnson and Stricker.  Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley made a small push but ultimately struggled to keep pace with Stricker and Johnson.  After a double bogey at hole 13, Johnson only held a one-stroke lead over Stricker.  But an eagle at 14 followed by a birdie at 15 pushed the lead back to three strokes.  Johnson wrapped up a four shot victory with a birdie at hole 18.  Stricker's bogey-free 69 was not enough to win but earned him a solo-second.

This is Johnson's seventh PGA Tour victory and his third 54-hole tournament victory.  Johnson has won the last three shortened tournaments on the PGA Tour.  Snedeker finished at 10-under par and in solo third, and Bradley and Watson rounded out the top-5 at 9-under par.  Rickie Fowler fired the round of the day, a six-under 67 to finish T6.

The PGA Tour next travels to The Sony Open, the second tournament in the Hawaii series.

2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions Recap

The 2013 PGA Tour season is finally underway.  After three days of cancelled golf, the players completed 36 holes today at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii at the Plantation Course.  Holes were played on Friday and Sunday before each round was called off and cancelled, an unprecedented happening on tour.  Players were becoming increasingly frustrated and restless waiting to get the season started.  After the rain and wind delays, today was a relief for the players, though the wind was still strong.

After the first round today, three players held the lead.  Dustin Johnson, Mark Wilson, and new Nike tour professional Nick Watney each grabbed a share of the top spot with 4-under 69s.  Watney reached the number with an eagle at the final hole.  Johnson birdied four holes on the back nine to shoot 69 while hitting 17 greens in regulation.  His round was slowed by three 3-putts on greens that were slowed to counteract the windy conditions.  Wilson shot a bogey-free round but failed to birdie any of the par 5s on the course.  Watney drained a 68 foot putt on the last hole for eagle which got him to 4-under par.

In a tie for fourth after round 1 were Ben Curtis, Rickie Fowler, Bubba Watson, and Brandt Snedeker.  The field played the course over a shot under par on average and only 6 players were over par.

The second round began right after players finished their first round.  Dustin Johnson continued his strong play with a 7-under 66 in round 2.  The round included 4 putts at eagle on the back 9 with a 3 on hole 18 for eagle.  Defending champion Steve Stricker shot a 6-under 67 in the second round to pull within 3 shots and finish the round at 8-under and in solo second.  Watson fired a 69 after a first-round 70 to pull into solo third and four shots behind Johnson.  And rounding out the top 5 after the second round are Keegan Bradley who fired a 69 and Snedeker who fired a second-straight 3-under 70.  Both players are tied at 6-under par.

Tee times for the final round start tomorrow afternoon and the tournament will be cut to 54 holes.

Tommy Gainey: -5
Webb Simpson: -2

2013 Hyundai Tournament of Champions Day 2 Recap

Another day, the same story.  The Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii was once again postponed.  However, play was never attempted today.  Players waited out the weather in the clubhouse and the caddie house, wasting time and hoping to hear good news on the weather.  But the rain and wind were unrelenting.  Winds maintained their strength at 40 mph with higher speed gusts while the rain never stopped.

Most players were hoping a trip to Hawaii in January would bring good weather and great golf.  But they are still waiting to hit their official first tee shots of 2013.  Ian Poulter kept the viewers up to date with tweets of news from PGA Tour officials and was the first to tell us play was cancelled this afternoon.  The only positives coming from the cancelled play are the great tweets we keep receiving from the players.

PGA Tour officials are planning 36 holes of golf tomorrow with the final 18 coming on the planned tournament end day, Monday.  The scheduled Monday finish hampered the tournament's ability to complete a full 72 holes, as players and technical crews need Tuesday to travel to the next tournament venue.  So the Hyundai Tournament of Champions will be shortened to 54 holes of tournament golf.

Play will begin early tomorrow morning, weather permitting, in Hawaii.  Rickie Fowler and Jason Dufner will try again to get the 2013 PGA Tour season underway.  For all of you fans who've been waiting for the start of the 2013 season, here's to hoping it begins tomorrow.

Hyundai Tournament of Champions Day 1

Day one at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions got underway on a wet, stormy, windy day.  Gale force winds and driving rain forced the players to struggle their way through the early holes.  Webb Simpson was off to a 3-under start through 7 holes before play was suspended due to the weather.  Eventually, the PGA Tour decided to cancel Round 1 play and erase the current scores.  The decision helped players like Scott Stallings and Keegan Bradley who were over par for the early part of their round.  Several players had yet to begin their round which made the decision to cancel play a case of fairness.  Play will get under way tomorrow if the weather cooperates.
