2013 Mitsubishi Electric Championship Preview: Champions Tour

The Champions Tour 2013 season begins this week in Hawaii with The Mitsubishi Electric Championship.  The 2013 season is going to be a good one on the Champions Tour, as new players become eligible for the tour and veterans continue to hone their games.  The Mitsubishi Electric Championship brings together 40 of the top over-50s in the world for three rounds at one of the most beautiful courses in the world, Hualalai Golf Course in Ka'upulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

In the field this week are some legends in the game.  Last year's winner, Dan Forsman, returns to defend his title.  2014 US Ryder Cup captain and legend Tom Watson makes another start on the Champions Tour, healthy and ready for a strong 2013 season.  Roger Champman, the Brit who won 2 major championships last season makes his debut at The Mitsubishi.  Steve Elkington is making his Champions Tour debut.  Other stars in the field in Hawaii include Tom Kite, Jim Thorpe, Fred Funk, Fred Couples, and Hale Irwin.

The course, Hualalai Golf Course, was the host of The Golf Channel's The Big Break.  Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course plays just over 7000 yards and par 72.  The course is built right into the lava of the volcanoes on Hawaii's islands.  The 17th hole plays as the signature hole on the course, where Nicklaus says the green: "touches the ocean."  Players will have ample scoring opportunities on the par 5s, so look for the finishing score to be low.

Watch the golf this week on The Golf Channel and Sirius XM PGA Radio.
