A week after failing to capture the Dubai Desert Classic after leading through 36 holes, South African Richard Sterne returned to his homeland and captured the 2013 Joburg Open by a whopping 7 strokes over fellow countryman Charl Schwartzel.
Sterne was near the top of the leaderboard the entire week, firing four rounds in the 60s to finish at 27-under par for the week. Sterne played about as well as anyone has played in the past year, and will move near the top of the Race to Dubai leaderboard.
Rounding out the top-5 were Felipe Aguilar, George Coetzee, and Ricardo Santos.
The win was Sterne's sixth career European Tour victory. He moves to the top of the Race to Dubai standings. He moves into the top-60 in the Official World Golf Ranking, which will qualify him for the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. He was outside the top-190 before the Dubai Desert Classic.
His 27-under par is a new record for the Joburg Open, beating Schwartzel's record of 23-under.
The European Tour next travels to the Africa Open.
